Using blogging to support our learning

Homework 4

We can often tell what someone’s parents are like from the way that person behaves, acts and speaks. We are evidence of our parents. Christians believe that we can also learn about what God is like by looking at the evidence of his creation.

Imagine that you are a citizen of a distant planet. You have been sent on a fact-finding mission to earth. They have heard about a creator called God, who, they have been told, created the entire universe. They have become very curious about this God and have sent you to have a look at what God created in order to see if there are any clues available as to what God is like. Write a letter telling them about what you have found on earth.

You could begin:

Dear Citizens of Pluto,

I am sending you my report about the evidence I have found for the Creator humans call “God”.
There are many examples of imagination and creativity amongst the humans here. For example, the building called the Eiffel Tower. It is a marvel of engineering, and is very striking. Humans must be very creative and enjoy producing unusual things. This makes me think that their Creator, God, must also be imaginative and have a sense of humour.

Creation and Evolution

I’ve found an interesting discussion on Christian responses to the theory of evolution:

It may be a bit difficult, but some of you might find it interesting!

Creation Story

This half term we will be learning about Creation. You can read the story of Creation as found in Genesis 1 by clicking here. Remember, you will need to compare it to the story found in Genesis 2!

Here is another version of Genesis 1.

1.1 Homework 1

This homework is to be handed in on Tuesday 15 September.

Complete the front cover for the Creation unit of work.

This front cover should include the aims, which you have copied in class, and should also include words and pictures which should be coloured in. Some of you have already started and are making good progress. The pictures should be on the theme of Creation, so could include images of the world, stars, hands, a brain, Biblical ideas of creation, images of Creation from other religions, images to do with how we should look after the environment … Anything which illustrates the idea of Creation.

Year 8 Creation Good Work

Creation

By the end of this unit, I will know:

* What are religious and scientific truths?
* What are the stories of Creation?
* How is God creator and sustainer?
* What does it mean to be created in the image of God?
* What is free will?
* How should we treat the environment?

Can one person make a difference to the planet?

WORD ON THE STREET

You have been learning about creation and stewardship of the earth. Do you think one person can make a difference? Watch the video, then leave a comment with your view.

Black History Month

In order to celebrate Black History Month, the RE Department is running a competition open to all Year 8s.

The deadline is Monday 13 October.

The prize is a gift voucher, and the opportunity to present your findings to the PTA.

The task?

Research the life of a significant black Christian. Present your findings in an interesting and original way.

You could:
* make a powerpoint presentation,
* write a speech,
* create an animation,
* create a podcast,
* make a poster,
* write a poem …
* … or something else! The choice is yours!

Whose life could you study? Well, the choice is yours, but here are a few suggestions:
* Archbishop Desmond Tutu
* Martin Luther King
* Cardinal Arinze
* Archbishop John Sentamu
* Mary Seacole
* St Josephine Bakhita
* St Martin de Porres
* Jesse Owens
* Pops Mensah-Bonsu
* Tony Jarrett

Do you recognise a few names connected to our school in that list? You could also research the life of Solomon Mahlangu, after whom our twin school in South Africa, Solomon Mahlangu Freedom College, is named.

We look forward to seeing and hearing your presentations!
